Mardi Himal Trek

The hidden ridge trail with jaw-dropping Annapurna views

The Mardi Himal trek is Nepal's best-kept secret for short treks. This 5-day route follows a forested ridge with increasingly dramatic views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and the Annapurna range. Unlike the busy Poon Hill trail, Mardi Himal sees far fewer trekkers, giving you a more intimate wilderness experience with equally spectacular mountain scenery.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A detailed look at each day of your Mardi Himal Trek adventure. Every itinerary is crafted to balance trekking, acclimatization, and cultural experiences.

Day 1

Day 1: Drive Pokhara to Kande — Trek to Forest Camp (2,520m)

Drive from Pokhara to Kande (1 hour). Begin the trek ascending through terraced farmland and into dense rhododendron forest. The trail climbs steadily to Forest Camp, a small collection of teahouses in a mossy forest clearing. About 4-5 hours of walking.

Day 2

Day 2: Forest Camp to Low Camp (2,990m)

Continue climbing through the forest along the ridge. The trees begin to thin and the first mountain views appear — Machhapuchhre towers above. Arrive at Low Camp with its open meadow and panoramic views. About 4 hours of walking.

Day 3

Day 3: Low Camp to High Camp (3,580m)

The ridge opens dramatically as you leave the treeline behind. Walk through alpine meadows with 360-degree views of the Annapurna range. High Camp is perched on the ridge with Mardi Himal directly ahead and Machhapuchhre towering to the east. About 4-5 hours of walking.

Day 4

Day 4: High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) — Return to Low Camp

Early morning push to Mardi Himal Base Camp viewpoint along a narrow ridge trail. The views are extraordinary — you are face-to-face with Machhapuchhre's south face and surrounded by the Annapurna massif. Return to High Camp for lunch and descend to Low Camp. About 7-8 hours total.

Day 5

Day 5: Low Camp to Siding — Drive to Pokhara

Descend through the forest on an alternate route via Siding village. The trail drops quickly through rhododendron forest back to the road. Drive back to Pokhara by early afternoon. About 4-5 hours of walking plus 1 hour drive.

Mardi Himal Trek — Frequently Asked Questions

How does Mardi Himal compare to Poon Hill?
Mardi Himal is slightly more challenging than Poon Hill — it reaches 4,500m versus 3,210m and has steeper sections. However, it is far less crowded and offers more dramatic close-up mountain views. If you want a more adventurous feel with a similar time commitment, Mardi Himal is the better choice.
Is altitude sickness a concern on Mardi Himal?
The highest point is 4,500m at the base camp viewpoint, which you visit as a day trip from High Camp at 3,580m. This means you sleep at a lower altitude than you hike. Most trekkers handle this well, but we monitor everyone and our guides carry basic altitude sickness medication.
What is the accommodation like?
Teahouses on the Mardi Himal trail are more basic than Poon Hill — smaller rooms, shared bathrooms, and limited charging facilities above Forest Camp. Beds have mattresses and warm blankets. The experience is more rustic and that is part of the charm.
When is the best time for Mardi Himal?
October to December and March to May are ideal. Autumn offers the clearest views and stable weather. Spring brings warmer temperatures and rhododendron blooms in the forest sections. Winter is possible but very cold at High Camp.
Do I need special gear?
Warm layers are essential for High Camp where temperatures can drop below freezing at night. A good sleeping bag, down jacket, warm hat, and gloves are necessary. We provide a complete packing list after booking. Gear can be rented in Pokhara.
